Esme liked to play alone. She spent hours crafting her miniatures and creating all sorts of scenarios for them. She liked gathering the supplies. She liked making all the details just so. She found the hubbub of the flock a bit overwhelming and often found herself confused when the others shared a laugh or got excited about whatever it was they got excited about. She’d retreat and focus on her tiny toys. The flock gave her the space she liked, but they also made sure she had her turn wearing the crown, and reminded her how very important and extraordinary and essential she was to them. She liked that too.
