Cucurbita was bursting with excitement. Visitors would return to her patch any day now. She loved to watch the choosy folks while they examined and compared each gourd. She delighted in the carefree kiddos who fell in love with the first pumpkin they laid eyes on. Cucurbita giggled with the cautious who skirted mud puddles and laughed with the go-getters as they plowed right through the muck.
If it rained, she danced; when the sun warmed her, she glowed with gratitude. “Autumn! Autumn! At last, Autumn!” she sang; nothing and no one could ever squash her joy during picking season.
